We recently took a trip to Dekalb Market. Located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, this community of artists, crafts people, farmers and chefs is housed in a makeshift marketplace constructed out of salvaged shipping containers.
First, we discovered 66 Blackbirds, whose friendly and dapper proprietor Carlos-Ameen and his friend/partner Yacira brilliantly restores vintage eyewear, making each frame look glossy and new again. Unique shapes from the 60s to the 80s line the custom made shelves in his light and airy container, including styles reminiscent of Jackie O’s Ninas, Run’s Cazals and cooler then ever frames a la Michael Caine.
With a focus on sustainability, the Dekalb Farm leads workshops on urban farming for neighborhood kids, and offers a space where people can visit, sit, relax, eat and watch the plants grow.
In the center of the market you will find a fresh-air communal dining area loaded with plenty of picnic tables, lit by string lights at night. It's the ideal setting for diving into one of the many surrounding eateries, such as the fried chickenbiscuit sandwich from Cheeky’s and fresh-brewed Tea by Tiffany.
Open seven days a week, the market is loaded with artisanal foods, original and handmade crafts, hip music stores and vintage shops. The feeling you get is more smalltown main street than big city mega-store…a welcome respite from the hard-edge hustle and bustle of downtown Brooklyn.
