Alternative's Best of 2011

With the year coming to a close, we wanted to give our community a quick look into the past with our hand-picked list of the top 11 best Alternative moments of 2011. From fashion shows and events to charity partnerships and grand openings, these are our most memorable moments of the year.

11. Earlier this month, we launched our Abbot Kinney store’s T-Shirt Recycling Program benefiting Upward Bound House in efforts to eliminate homelessness in California.

10. In March, our PR team went on the road to Austin, Texas for SXSW to promote the brand and share in all the fun. We hosted the Alternative Lounge and served as the go-to spot for VH1 interviews with popular artists like Foster the People, Duran Duran, Dirty Vegas and Moby.

9. In April, we introduced a year-long partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and designed the Alternative Pink Ribbon collection which gives 10% of retail price to benefit breast cancer with a minimum $25,000 donation.

8. In February, we launched Common Thread, Alternative's first digital magazine designed to promote community, culture and consciousness and celebrate the people behind our brand.

7. This past fall, singer-songwriter Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy designed her own limited edition Alternative tees in a collaboration to benefit the International Union for Conservation of Nature and sold them exclusively at our Abbot Kinney store.

6. We decided to settle down in the Big Apple and opened our first New York office and showroom located in Midtown.

5. We showcased our fall 2011 and spring 2012 lines at L.A. Fashion Week with performances from the Silverlake Chorus and Ry Cumming, respectively.

4. Over the course of the year, Alternative styles were featured on the covers of eight major U.S. fashion and lifestyle magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Elle, Men's Fitness, GQ and more.

3. This season, our design team turned our best-selling hoodie style, the Rocky Hoodie, into an adult Uni Suit as part of our 2011 Holiday Collection. Who says onesies are just for kids?

2. At the first of the year, Alternative rebranded with a new logo and website which better translated our company culture and philosophy.

1. Our long-awaited flagship store opened in Venice, CA on Abbot Kinney Blvd. on Earth Day, April 22nd.
