The official start of fall is only one week away, and although it always pains me to stow away my shorts and flip flops, there is a certain joy that comes with unpacking my fall boots, coats and scarves. If your closet is not quite prepared for the dip in temperatures, just add a few key pieces into the mix to update your wardrobe for the new season and liven up your look.
For the ladies, spring’s chambray trend is still going strong and this season it’s taking the form of versatile button-up tops and—one of our favorite looks—the chambray shirt dress. Pair it with tights and platforms or flats and leggings for a look that’s perfect for work or play and ideal for the crisper weather. And speaking of leggings, another fall favorite, stock up on these and layer them under everything. You can play it safe with solids or experiment with trendier versions featuring cut-outs, animal prints, florals or lace.
When it comes to fall, the sweater reigns supreme—cardigans, pullovers, cable knit, cocoons, you name it. This season, work a chic cowl neck sweater into your wardrobe. Not quiet as uptight as a turtleneck but still cozy and comfortable, cowl necks look lovely layered under a blazer or a long, varsity-style cardigan. Another sweater staple is a flowing wrap. This is your all-purpose fall throwover that works with everything.
As for gentlemen, you can start with a must-have hoodie. If you still have that raggedy hooded sweatshirt that’s been in your closet for years, it’s time to upgrade to a newer, sleeker model. If you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend the hoodie-blazer combo for a fall evening look to score yourself some major style points. All you need is a pair of flawless-fitting khakis to finish off the look. And if you only take part in one trend this fall, make it the military trend. You’ll look rugged and effortlessly cool in a military-inspired jacket.
