School is out for summer, kids, and that means it’s time for summer vacation. If you’re stressing over what to pack for your getaway, it’s time you go nautical. The ever-popular nautical look—hands down my favorite trend in recent years—is back for summer 2010 and this season’s styles are exceedingly smart and chic, by land or by sea.
I know what you’re thinking—"it’s not like I’m going to Saint Tropez with P. Diddy for the summer"—but you don’t actually have to go to a resort to rock your resortwear. These days, crisp, tailored shirts, nautical stripes, sailor shorts and that oh-so-nice brass button detailing are as appropriate for a night on the town as they are for a day at sea. Here are a few fashion tips to help you make some waves this summer.
Go beyond navy.
Sure, navy is super-slimming and an integral part of your resortwear, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sprinkle some color into your look with some yellow, orange and red. Step up your classic navy blazer (with gold buttons, of course) but wearing breezy yellow tank underneath or give your white and blue ensemble an extra kick with some bold, colorful platform wedges.Mind your stripes.
Horizontal stripes are quintessentially nautical, but they must be worn strategically. If you’re curvy, try layering your striped shirt or sweater beneath a lightweight solid cardigan, or pair it with über-flattering high-waisted shorts or pants. Sailor-inspired bottoms work with virtually every body type, creating an elongated, streamlined silhouette.Bring on the accessories.
Dressing up your outfit with gold jewelry, rope-style belts and anchor-accented anything are arguably the most fun part of going nautical. Don’t go overboard, just add one or two of these style elements to pull it all together and keep it modern. A straw fedora or a panama hat is another great way to top off your look and keep cool. For more of summer's top trends, check out Alternative's New Arrivals for Women and Men.
