No snow, no snowboarding: "I think people are drawn to environmental issues for a number of reasons, and mine stems from my love for the outdoors. I’m a big fan of cycling, snowboarding, and climbing – you name it and I’ll try it! When I was in college, I spent a month in the back country of Wyoming with a program that ingrained the Leave No Trace Behind ethics in my head daily. From there on out, I really started to try to apply the mentality of “leave everything as you found it or better” to as many parts of my life as I could.
"In the Spring of 2008, I was extremely fortunate and was able to travel to Antarctica with an environmental group to see first-hand the effects of climate-change. The entire trip served as training seminar for sustainable leadership, and it, without a doubt, changed my life for the better. I learned that climate change will be the issue of our generation, and the time to act is now. From seeing Larson B ice shelf fragments to visiting a site where over one million whales were killed at one point in time, I felt a call to action like I never would have imagined. Our group lived for two weeks off of completely renewable energy in Antarctica – the harshest environment in the world. We wanted to prove that if we could do it there, we could do it anywhere in the world.
Sustainable base
"When I got back, I served as an ambassador for the organization and spoke to various colleges on the West Coast speaking about my experience in Antarctica, stressing the importance of everyone doing their part every day. For me personally, I became more aware of the sustainability of the products I was purchasing, and I try to volunteer my time to groups promoting environmental awareness every chance I get. I’m a big proponent of buying local produce, recycling, and carpooling whenever I can. I was even able to talk my parents into buying solar panels for their home! This year will also be my first to offset my car’s carbon emissions, which I’m really excited about. Every little bit helps!"
